Choosing Fabric for Activewear and Swimwear: What You Need to Know

My Blog Article

Sewing your own activewear and swimwear is one of the most rewarding ways to build a wardrobe that truly fits the way you move. Store-bought leggings can sag at the knees, and swimsuits rarely suit every body shape straight off the rack. When you make these pieces yourself, you control the fit, the coverage, and the finish. The catch is that performance garments ask a lot of their materials, so choosing the right fabric matters even more here than it does for everyday clothing. Here is what to look for before you cut.

What Makes a Fabric Right for Movement and Water

Stretch and recovery come first. Activewear and swimwear need four-way stretch, meaning the fabric stretches both along the length and across the width, and just as importantly, it needs to snap back into shape after being pulled. Nylon and polyester blends with a generous percentage of elastane offer this combination, and they are the standard for leggings, sports bras, and swimsuits. When you shop, give the fabric a firm stretch and watch how quickly it returns; a slow or incomplete recovery is a sign it will bag out with wear.

Weight and opacity come next. A medium-weight knit gives good coverage for squats and stretches without feeling heavy, while lighter weights suit running tops and layering pieces. For swimwear, look for fabrics labelled chlorine-resistant, since pool chemicals break down ordinary elastane surprisingly fast, and consider UV protection for outdoor sports. Moisture-wicking finishes help workout gear dry quickly and stay comfortable during long sessions. Pay attention to the hand of the fabric as well: a smooth, brushed, or matte surface feels better against the skin during hours of wear and reduces chafing at the seams. Prints and colours are the fun part, but always check that a light shade stays opaque when stretched over the body. On recovery days, a soft pair of pajamas or a sleep mask made from satin fabric is a gentle way to rest after an intense training week.

Sew for Performance, Not Just Looks

The best activewear and swimwear fabrics balance stretch, recovery, weight, and durability. Before starting a project, test a swatch by stretching it, holding it up to the light, and, for swimwear, checking the fibre content for chlorine resistance. Use a stretch or ballpoint needle, a narrow zigzag or coverstitch, and swim elastic where the pattern calls for it. With the right material and a little preparation, your handmade pieces will keep up with every workout, lap, and beach day.
